HYPE. REVIEWS: NETFLIX’S ENOLA HOLMES

*SPOILERS ALERT* With Sherlock Holmes captivating society for decades after being created in 1887 by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. We’re in 2020, so it’s time to move over Sherlock, there’s another Holmes detective in town. Netflix’s film which debuted this September follows his younger sister, Enola, with appearances from brother Mycroft Holmes.

Based on The Enola Holmes Mysteries series by Nancy Springer, the movie begins with Millie Bobby Brown as Enola (who can finally act with her native British accent), detailing her early years. Sherlock (Henry Cavill) and older brother Mycroft (Sam Clafin) quickly leave Ferndell Hall (the Holmes Residence), leaving Enola living alone with her quirky mother, Eudoria (Helena Bonham Carter). Eudoria teaches Enola about Jiu Jutsu, classic literature and a whole load of exciting things that a young lady in that time era just wouldn’t be taught.

It’s her 16th birthday and Enola’s woken to find her mother missing, calling Mycroft and Sherlock (who she hasn’t seen in years and instantly see her as the train help) to return and help find their mother. Mycroft immediately decides to send Enola to a finishing school to focus on a proper education. Enola then discovers that her mother has left (in true Eudoria manner) a cipher trail, deciding school is not meant to be, Enola cracks the code and sets of to London.

From there, Enola gets into various misadventures and scrapes (and various costume changes!) along the way. Her quest to find her mother becomes entangled in the murder plot of the ridiculously named Viscount Tewkesbury (Louis Partridge). The scenes where Enola is the center are engaging and entertaining. The film becomes tedious when the focus is on Sherlock and Mycroft. Millie Bobby Brown shines in this role. Fans expecting the same classic Sherlock Holmes mysteries may be disappointed in this, but Millie as Enola Holmes gives us a performance that’s so much more than…elementary.
