OUR TOP TEN NETFLIX PICKS FOR HALLOWEEN

Jade

For many of us, Halloween will be a home event this year, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. What better excuse than to stock up on snacks, turn the lights down low and settle in for some scarily good Halloween entertainment? Netflix have treated us to some frightfully good offerings for the occasion already, so if you’re a lover of a horror flick or two, you’re in luck. We’ve rounded up some of our top picks you’ll find on Netflix to get you in the mood for Halloween, with everything from binge-worthy shows to heartstopping horror movies. Whether it’s slasher flicks, supernatural thrillers, or cult classics, we’ve got you covered. We’ve even thrown in a few picks from the tamer end of the scale, for those who want to get in the mood for the occasion without giving themselves nightmares!

Stranger Things

Whether you’re new to the Upside Down or not, Stranger Things is the perfect show to binge this Halloween. Set in the early 1980s in a small American town, the show is all about the supernatural and the paranormal, with a science laboratory inadvertently creating a portal to an alternate dimension known as the Upside Down, which begins affecting the town’s residents in mysterious ways.

The Addams Family & Addams Family Values

It’s important not to forget the classics! Based on the classic cartoon, the original black comedy movie featuring the eccentric aristocratic family was originally released back in 1991 and is still a great choice to bring out for a few laughs. Why not follow it up with the sequel, Addams Family Values, which is packed with even more dark humour and has most fans arguing that it’s even better than the first film.

The Haunting of Hill House

If you love all things supernatural, be sure to check out The Haunting of Hill House this Halloween. Based on the 1959 novel, and easily bingeable over a weekend, this horror drama series focuses on a group of adult siblings reliving the terrifying paranormal events at Hill House that continue to haunt them. Receiving high praise from horror fans, you’ll be hooked right up to the very last scene. Even better news, the second part of The Haunting anthology – The Haunting of Bly Manor – is due to be released on the 9th October too.

The Conjuring

Just one of the many supernatural horrors on Netflix this October, is The Conjuring. Based on true case files of paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, the movie follows them as they work to help a family terrorised by strange events in their farmhouse. According to IMDB, the film achieved its R rating (a 15 here in the UK) purely for its scare factor, and is loaded with scenes guaranteed to have you jumping out of your skin. You may need to watch a few episodes of Friends after this one…or was that just us?

Black Mirror – Various Episodes

Who didn’t love the intense, mind-twisting plots and alternate worlds that Black Mirror came up with? While there’s five seasons to delve into, each episode serves as a stand-alone piece, so you can easily pick and choose which ones you watch. Whether you’ve seen them before or you’re watching for the first time, the suspense and intensity of the show makes certain episodes ideal for watching this Halloween:
White Bear
Arkangel
Crocodile

Misery

Let’s be honest, if it’s based on a Stephen King novel, you’re in for a treat. This 1990 psychological thriller tells the tale of a writer held captive by an obsessive fan and features one of the most horrifying torture scenes in cinema. Don’t be fooled by the early-90s release date – there’s scenes in here that are graphic and intense enough to rival what you see in the Saw films.

American Horror Story

The clue is of course in the name of this horror anthology series, the creation of Glee’s Ryan Murphy. There’s eight seasons to delve into, with each one standing alone as a mini-series. Packed with bloody violence, gore, and scenes that are downright disturbing, AHS is a wickedly dark and deranged experience that horror fans are sure to love.

Annabelle

Creeped out by dolls? Us too, and we think movies like this are to blame. Written as a prequel to The Conjuring, Annabelle tells the story of a couple who experience terrifying supernatural occurrences relating to an antique doll. There’s plenty of moments that will have you unexpectedly jumping out of your seat, along with some disturbing and gory violence making this a great choice to watch in the dark this Halloween.

Ratched

Serving as a prequel to the classic novel (and later film) One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Ratched is one of Netflix’s newest arrivals and has already been a huge hit and tells the story of psychiatric nurse Mildred Ratched. Another creation of Ryan Murphy, this psychological drama brings with it a similar feel to American Horror Story, so is a great choice if you’re not sure what to watch next.

Paranormal Activity 2/3/4/The Ghost Dimension

While the first film in the series doesn’t appear to be available on Netflix at the moment, you can still spend your Halloween bingeing the rest of the Paranormal Activity franchise for a chilling evening of supernatural terror that more than likely will result in you sleeping with the landing light on. Definitely not for the faint hearted.

There’s plenty more where that came from when it comes to Netflix’s Halloween selection, and whether you’re a horror film fan or not, there’s something for everyone, whether it’s gruesome slasher flicks, spooky supernatural shows or even family friendly classics. What are your go-to movies for Halloween? Let us know in the comments!
